Monday, Mar 23 to Sunday, Mar 29, 2009: high 62, low 8

This weekend Kent & Sandie and Sarah, and Dicksy & Harvey, and Mom worked at Wingsprings. Our outdoor task was to joist the two cabins above. Eventually there will be six adjoining cabins that will fit partially under the roof that connects the house and the bathhouse.

The photo above was taken Wednesday morning from the bathroom window. Beyond the snow bank, you can see five columns. These columns are on an arc that is 48’ from the point around which the Wingsprings facilities are designed.  From that center point, the angle between adjacent columns is 9 degrees. We call the space between two columns a bay. When the facilities are completed, there will be 40 bays that encompass a 96’ diameter outdoor “courtyard.” The photo below was taken from the same window the previous day during the snow storm.

This photo above–taken Sunday, March 22–shows the rim joists bolted onto the posts of the two cabins. There will eventually be one more cabin on the far side of these two, plus three additional cabins in the foreground and behind where the photo is taken from. As the photo below shows, the cabins are partially under the existing roof. We call the three curved “walls” that you can see on the ceiling of the roof that connects the house to the bathhouse “drum walls.” From right to left, they are 48’, 53’, and 57’ from the center point of the courtyard. The cabin doors will be in the 53’ drum wall. Chris and Corey dug out the earth in preparation for joisting the first two cabins.
