Discovered this sad scene Monday afternoon: seven baby rabbits dead. Three apparently were drug from their “nest,” their eyes still closed. The other four were huddled together in the underground nest. One of them was partially eaten–the only sign of foul play. There was a torrential downpour the night before, so perhaps they had drowned?

On May 25th I watched as this rabbit dug the nest.

Then she covered it up. Maybe a week later she uncovered it and then covered it again. Does the mother cover the babies inside the nest after birth? How long after birth before the babies’ eyes are open and they can leave the nest?
