Betsy, Sam, Ann, Janet, and Brian hard at work on the Monday evening assessment of their collective knowledge regarding Oceti Sakowin nations and South Dakota reservations. They were participants in the second of CAIRNS’ summer workshops hosted at Wingsprings. It was titled, the Geographical Approach to Teaching Lakota Culture. This workshop surveyed the complex interrelationships between Lakota identities and the landmarks and geography of the northern Great Plains, beginning with emergence onto this world. It also covered contemporary issues such as treaty lands, the allotment process, competing land uses, and protection of sacred sites.
