Monday, Jan 25 to Sunday, Jan 31, 2010: high 43, low 5

Thursday the 28th, Dan and I finished tiling the bedroom floor. He cut the final pieces and then mixed the mortar and we stuck the tiles down. Laying out the pattern was somewhat complicated because the center-point of the circle is on the other side of the bedroom’s west wall. So everything was done by calculation and geometry. It took days to get all of the tiles drawn onto the floor. And then it took a couple more days to cut all the tiles. The total number of tiles in the bedroom is 254, and all but 15 of them had at least two cuts.

There are 101 tiles in the north “half” of the bedroom. The centerline of the bedroom is the center of a row of radiating tiles that straddle the Wingsprings west-east axis. There are 9 tiles in this row. The narrowest end is 2-5/16ths of an inch wide, whereas the widest end is 9-5/16ths inches across. This centerline row is staggered in comparison to the rest of the bedroom tiles. The south side of the bedroom contains 129 tiles, plus 15 square tiles that serve as a curving border. Four of these are visible in the lower-left of the picture below. The next step is to grout between all the tiles.
