This sharp-tailed grouse, or sharpie, was feeding first thing Monday morning just outside the living room window. Looking at online sources, sparpies and chickens (greater prairie chickens) can be distinguished by breast feathers (spotted vs barred), tail feathers (pointed and light vs fanned and dark) and leg and feet feathers (white legs and feet vs light brown legs and none on their feet). Sharpies and chickens can be in the same covey, according to the sources.
