According to the automatic plant identification feature on the phone camera, the tree whose roots are shown here is an elm. What caught my eye were the two orangish-red roots. Was curious what caused them so checked online and it might be “a chemical reaction involving iron in the soil.” Essentially, its rust on the roots caused by lots of water and not enough oxygen. This tree is near the north end of the sanctuary and near the flowing springs. The water table is high and maybe that is what caused the “rust”. Or maybe it is something altogether different.
