Saturday afternoon was cold (22-29 degrees with “feel like” temps of 10-19 degrees) and breezy. Lee and i were walking in the Sanctuary and were startled by the sight of a furry something hanging in one of the small juniper tree that Glenn and i transplated from his home a number of years ago. Upon close inspection, its size and incisors identified it as a juvenile vole and not a mole. Moles mostly live underground whereas voles are more often above ground and gnaw on the bark of trees. This one may have been doing that, as you can see stripped bark in the photo. Thought the little guy might have been gutted and then discarded randomly by maybe a bird, but there is no trauma evident on any part of the body, particularly not the belly. So the cause of death is unknown.
